Acorus calamus a perennial plant, grows to a height of 1m, the plant is not frost tender. The flowers are hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Insects.
Acorus calamus has a very long history of medicinal use in many herbal traditions. It is widely employed in modern herbal medicine as an aromatic stimulant and mild tonic. Sweet flag was a very popular plant in Europe from the middle ages, right through to today, finding application mostly as aphrodisiac, elixir and stimulant, and in magic rituals.
